The internet is full of factual and not-so-factual information about e-cigarettes and the world of vaping. But if you’re not familiar with the hobby and various vape vernacular, it can be easy to get overwhelmed and a bit dazed. So, for your first vaping 101 lesson, we’ve provided an extensive (but not exhaustive) glossary of vaping terminology to help get you up to speed.

Atomizer

The word “atomizer” is used to describe any device that can transform liquid into a mist. When it comes to vaping, it is the component of your device that is responsible for heating up your vape juice in order to create the smokable vapor.

Battery

Batteries are the engine or power that drives your vaporizer. To vape, you’ll need a battery that is powerful and able to last a long time. When choosing your vape battery, you should consider output, capacity and safety.

Blend

Blend is a term used to describe the ratio of propylene glycol to vegetable glycerin in an e-liquid.

Box mod

A box mod is an electronic cigarette device, of a square-shaped design, that contains an internal battery or has housing space for an external battery. Box mods come in two forms: regulated and unregulated.

Cartomizer

Cartomizers are very similar to atomizers. The biggest difference is that cartomizers have polyfill wrapped around a heating coil. This soaks the e-juice and allows for longer vape time than an atomizer does.

Cartridge

A vape cartridge is a removable container that holds e-liquid. These often include an absorbent filler material.

Cig-a-Like

A cig-a-like is an e-cig designed to look like a tobacco cigarette.

Clearomizer

A clearomizer is typically cylindrical. The tank can be made of either a clear polycarbonate plastic or pyrex glass. The clear tank allows users to better see the level of e-juice inside of the clearomizer. E-juice is delivered to the heating coil by a silica wick.

Closed system

Closed-system e-cigarettes use tanks, which come ready-filled with e-liquid, and screw directly onto the e-cig battery. The mouthpiece is built into the e-cigarette tank.

Coil

The coil is simply the metal conductor for the heating element (atomizer) of your device.

Deck

A deck, in regards to RBAs and RDAs, is the flat base where the negative and positive posts sit. The deck is meant to keep e-juice off of the battery connection.

Drip tip

An alternative to the more common e-cigarette cartridge or cartomizer, a drip tip is essentially a reusable hollow tube that screws directly onto the atomizer, allowing the user to drip e-liquid onto it.

Dripping

Dripping is the process of putting e-liquid directly onto the heating element (atomizer) as opposed to using a cartridge or cartomizer.

Dry hit

This is a harsh-tasting hit resulting from an insufficient supply of e-juice.

E-cigarette

An electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette, is a type of vaping device that resembles the shape of a tobacco cigarette and simulates the feeling of tobacco smoking.

E-juice/E-liquid

E-juice and e-liquid are both terms for the flavored liquids e-cigs and other vaping devices use to produce vapor.

Lung Hit

The process of inhaling vapor directly into the lungs.

Mechanical Mod

A mechanical mod is an unregulated device without any circuit board. It runs directly off a battery. Since there is no circuitry and the batteries provide continuous power, vapor production reduces as the battery nears the end of its lifespan.

Mod

A mod is a type of vaporizer made up of separable components. This term originally applied to personal vaporizers that had been either modified from a pre-manufactured device or built from scratch. But the term “mod” is now commonly used to describe any vaping device that isn’t a cig-a-like.

Mouth Hit

A mouth hit is when vapor is drawn from an e-cig into the mouth before either inhaling it into the lungs or blowing it back out.

Nic/No-nic

Nic refers to e-liquids with nicotine. No-nic refers to e-liquids without nicotine.

Nicotine Salts

Also called “nic salt” or “nic salt juice,” nicotine salt is a combination of nicotine and organic compounds found in tobacco leaves. Nicotine salts deliver nicotine fast and offer a smooth throat hit.

Ohm

An ohm is the measure of electrical resistance. The lower the resistance the faster the coil heats.

Open System

An open-system vaporizer has a clearomizer that is manually filled with e-liquid. The mouthpiece is removable.

PG

"PG" stands for propylene glycol and is a common base for e-liquids.

Pod Mod

A pod mod is a vaping device that uses either refillable or disposable pods. A pod is very simply an e-juice cartridge designed for ease of use and convenience.

RBA

RBA stands for “rebuildable atomizer.” The coils of an RBA can be built to your own desired resistance.

Resistance

This refers to the rate at which electricity travels through the heating element. It's measured in ohms.

RDA

A rebuildable drip atomizer, a type of RBA, is a dripper system that allows you to physically wrap a coil, attach it to the system and add a wick.

RDTA

Rebuildable dripping tank atomizers have a rebuildable deck similar to RDAs. While they can hold the e-liquid capacity of a tank, they don’t accept manufactured coil systems.

Regulated Mod

A regulated mod is a device that contains a circuit board to regulate the current and prevent overheating. Any vaping device that includes one or more safeguards or advanced features (like power adjustment options) from electronic circuitry is a regulated mod.

RTA

A rebuildable tank atomizer is a tank system with a rebuildable coil. You fill it up and vape until the liquid is gone. RTAs tend to be harder to build than other rebuildable atomizers because they have multiple parts.

Sub-Ohm

Sub-ohm vaping is the act of vaping on a device with atomizer coils with less than one ohm of resistance. Sub-ohming increases the power output of fixed voltage devices like mechanical vape mods and regulated devices to create more flavor or vapor.

Tank

The tank is a e-liquid reservoir to be used with a mod.

TC Devices

Temperature-controlled devices monitor coil resistance as it is heated. Each time a slight change in resistance is detected, the temperature control function automatically adjusts the power to prevent coil damage.

Threading

A connection used to attach the e-liquid container to the device.

Unregulated Mod

“Unregulated mod” is another term for mechanical mod. It is a vape device that supplies raw battery power to an atomizer with no electronic circuitry, power adjustments or electronic safety features. An unregulated mod is the simplest of all vape mods when it comes to functionality. A simple press of a button will complete the circuit and send battery power to the installed atomizer and coil.

Vape Juice/Vape Liquid

Vape juice or vape liquid is a mixture of water, food-grade flavoring, propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin, and (optionally) nicotine.

Vaper's Tongue

This is a temporary dulling of the sense of taste. It sometimes follows very intense vaping or the act of vaping the same flavor for long periods of time.

VG

“VG” stands for vegetable glycerin and is another common e-liquid base.

VV

Variable voltage allows users to control a vaporizer's voltage.

VW

Variable wattage allows users to control a vaporizer's wattage.

Wick

A wick is an absorbent material that draws e-liquid onto the heating element.
