Vaping has become an incredibly popular hobby, especially for cigarette smokers looking for a healthier alternative. But it’s important that users fully understand how e-juice nicotine strength works and how regular and nicotine salt-based e-juice compare to regular tobacco cigarettes.

 E-Liquid Nicotine Vs. Traditional Cigarettes

If you’ve ever tried to compare e-juices and nicotine salts to regular cigarettes, you know it’s extremely difficult to do. This is because e-liquid nicotine levels are normally labeled in milligrams per milliliter (mg/ml) or as a percentage. Let’s break down the different e-liquid nicotine levels and how they stack up to traditional cigarettes.

These e-liquid measurements are based on the amount of nicotine in each milliliter of e-liquid, for example if an e-liquid is labeled as 6 mg/ml, there are 6 mg/ml (or 0.6%) of nicotine in each milliliter of e-juice. Remember to calculate this number based on the amount of e-liquid being used. If you’re using a 6 mg/ml e-liquid, that means a 10 ml bottle contains 60 mg of nicotine.

But Which Strength Is Right For You?

Before deciding what level of e-liquid strength to purchase, you need to consider a few factors. Take into account your own traditional cigarette smoking habits and compare that to the e-liquid nicotine level in the chart above.

Many people who decide to try vaping often make the mistake of choosing an e-liquid with a nicotine level that is simply too high for their needs. Keep in mind that e-cigs deliver nicotine through inhalation and thus the strength delivered is much higher than nicotine patches or gums.

Consider these guidelines:

  • If you enjoy vaping but don’t want the nicotine, or you’re trying to quit nicotine, 0 mg/ml strength might be for you. Vaping can be enjoyed for reasons other than nicotine. Some enjoy the flavors and some simply vape to satisfy an oral fixation.
  • If you’re experimenting with e-cigs as an alternative to cigarettes, begin with a low strength when it comes to e-juices and nic salt-based e-liquids. If you start off with a high-strength e-liquid, it can make you sick and also increase your addiction to nicotine.
  • If you’re a light smoker, maybe stick to light or medium-level e-liquids or nic salt juice.
  • If you’ve historically been a heavy smoker, you’ll want to opt for a strong to super-strong e-juice or nic salts.
  • If you need more nicotine and are currently using a closed-system e-cig, try using nicotine salts. With nic salts, you’re able to get a lot of nicotine without the harsh hit. Some vapers even say they feel the effects of nicotine faster with nic salts than with e-juice.

Like cigarettes, there is no set “dosage.” The dose really varies based on the size, frequency and depth of your inhalation. Feel free to experiment the first few times you vape. You’ll soon discover the right level and dosage for you.
